Have you always wanted to try weaving but didn't know where to begin?

This relaxed, hands-on beginner's weaving workshop in Edinburgh is an introduction to the wonderful world of rigid heddle weaving. Over two sessions, you'll learn the foundations of handweaving and create your own scarf on a rigid heddle loom.

The workshop is deliberately small, with a maximum of four people, giving you plenty of time for guidance and questions while enjoying the social side of making alongside other creative people.

What you'll do

During the first workshop, we'll work through the process together, from choosing your colours and preparing your loom to taking your first steps with the shuttle.

You'll:

  • Choose a warp pattern for your scarf

  • Select your yarn and colour palette

  • Learn how to warp your rigid heddle loom

  • Learn how to start your weaving using a hemming stitch

  • Begin weaving your scarf

You don't need any previous weaving experience. I'll guide you through each stage and you'll have plenty of opportunity to practise as you go.

At the end of the first session, you'll take your prepared loom home with you so that you can continue weaving your scarf at your own pace over the following three weeks.

At our second session, we'll meet back at the studio to remove your finished weaving from the loom together and complete the project. Your woven scarf will then be yours to take home, while the loom will be returned to the studio ready for another workshop.

What's included?

Everything you need to get started is provided, including:

  • Kromski Harp Forte rigid heddle loom

  • Yarn and weaving materials

  • Up to three shuttles for your project

  • Loom carry bag

  • All equipment needed during the workshop

  • Tea and coffee

Lunch & refreshments

We'll take a 45-minute lunch break during the first session.

Lunch isn't provided, but you're welcome to bring your own. There is a fridge and microwave available at the studio, and there are plenty of lovely cafés nearby in Leith if you'd rather head out for lunch.

Tea and coffee will be available throughout the workshop.

A note about taking your loom home

If you're unable to take the loom home between the two sessions, that's absolutely fine.

In this case, your warp pattern and colours will need to be chosen before the workshop. I'll prepare the loom for you in advance, so that when you arrive, you can get straight to the enjoyable part — weaving.

A small group, a slow craft and something you've made yourself

This isn't about rushing through a project. It's about learning a new skill, getting away from screens and busy schedules, and enjoying the quiet rhythm of making something with your hands.

By the end, you'll have learnt the fundamentals of rigid heddle weaving, gained experience using a floor-style table loom and have your own handwoven scarf to show for it.
